RTE visit Nenagh College

Students from Nenagh College have been actively involved in the “choose respect” campaign, which was conceived by Marney O Regan and Denis Finnerty in the wake of Aisling Murphy’s death last year.  Over the past year, members of the Student Council have met and held group discussions with students from the CBS and local representatives.

Ms O Keeffe (SPHE co-ordinator) received training from Professor Louise Crowley of UCC on the Bystander Intervention Programme last May, this programme allows students the space and time to reflect and discuss issues of safety and behaviours which have become normalised in our society. Students will gain the knowledge of how to intervene to keep others safe, while at the same time keeping themselves safe.

RTE News visited Nenagh College on Monday to find out about students views on the Bystander Intervention Programme. It was broadcast on Wednesday 9th November on the six one news and on news2day on RTE 2.

Ava Delaney (Chairperson), Emma Gleeson, Tadhg Creagh were interviewed by Cathy Halloran. Laura Corish, Juliette Kerin, Brian O Connor, Callum Delahunty and Darragh Corish also attended the discussion.

Over the coming months students will continue to work on the “choose respect” social media campaign in collaboration with local representatives and the CBS.

TETB’s student councils meet via teams

39 student council representatives were invited to a talk by Dr Joe O Connell on teams with the other 11 schools within TETB. This was followed by a discussion on strategic planning within Tipperary Education and Training Board (TETB), for the coming years 2023-2027.
Students discussed our strengths and key issues of concern. Well done to Cian Sullivan who volunteered to report back to the other 11 schools on line. It was a very fruitful and worthwhile experience.

Nenagh College are proud partners of the new safety initiative

A cross-community initiative has begun in Nenagh, Co Tipperary to challenge unacceptable behaviour towards women and young girls in social settings and online.

Businesses, schools, sports clubs and workplaces across the town and the surrounding area have all signed up for the “Choose Respect” campaign.

The campaign is also reaching out to young people in schools in the town who are taking part in the UCC-led “Bystander Intervention’ campaign which is run across 50 schools in Ireland. Students from Nenagh College  have taken part in the programme as part of the wider respect campaign in the town.

3D Printing

Students in the Technology Department at Nenagh College were aiding with the assembly, and also showcasing their design skills using the newly added 3D printer. 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process that creates a physical object from a digital design.

Students will now benefit from bringing their design ideas to life though the use of CAD, with the added bonus of being able to prototype with models.Pictured are some of our third year students designing and manufacturing a required part for their Junior Certificate Engineering project.

PISA 2022

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a project of the organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD). About 80 countries take part, making PISA the largest study of its kind. PISA assesses the skills and knowledge of 15- and 16-year-olds in three areas reading literacy, science and mathematics, every three years. The first cycle of PISA took place in 2000, and in 2022,  mathematics will be the main focus.
170 schools have been selected to participate, 46 students from each school.
This is a great opportunity for our school but also for our 46 students that have been chosen to participate.
