Fisnev partner with Nenagh College for Stem Event

Almost 350 boys and girls descended on Nenagh College this week for the school’s annual STEM days.

This is a unique opportunity for the students from 15 primary schools from the surrounding areas to sample subjects to which they might not have daily access.  Subjects such as Engineering, Wood Technology, Science and Coding are available to the students as well as Home Economics and PE.

There was a great air of excitement when, after meeting with the STEM day Coordinator at Nenagh College, Ms. Nichola Carey and their Transition Year guides, the pupils set off on an adventure through the school’s state-of-the- art facilities.

What made this year’s STEM event more exciting was the partnership with Fiserv. Fiserv’s executive assistant office manager and Nenagh native, Samantha Neary, had worked closely, with the school, in advance of the STEM day to ensure that a number of her team were on hand to support the delivery of the Coding and Computer Science module which included a lesson on Robotics.

School Principal, Damien Kennedy noted the increase in demand for STEM based education over the last number of years, the increase in demand for STEM subjects is particularly noticeable amongst girls. This has led to the school population almost doubling in size over the last number of years, an increase which has led to the school and the Patron body, Tipperary ETB, lodging an application for additional accommodation with the DES. A new Engineering room will be a priority in any future increase in accommodation.

Each day ended with the students enjoying a freshly made lunch courtesy of Patricia O Shea and her Get Fresh catering team.

All 2nd year Home Economic students completed a wet felting piece of their own. It was a great experience and it was wonderful to be able to learn a new skill.
