The Leaving Certificate Applied National Award
The Leaving Certificate Applied National Awards (LCANA) “Feargal Quinn Awards” are presented each year to those students who obtain the top results in the Leaving Certificate Applied Examination of that year, as notified by the State Examinations Commission.
Nenagh College are very proud to have such a student in Emma Freeman, who was one of the students to obtain the best Leaving Certificate Applied results in Ireland in 2022.
Emma is pictured with Ms Catherine O Keeffe (LCA Co-ordinator) at the awards ceremony in The Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone, on 21st January 2023 with Eamonn Quinn.
Emma’s final credit total is based on her performance in the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) Examination over 5th year and 6th year, due to the continuous assessment mode of the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme. She is currently studying Applied Psychology and Social Studies in Templemore College of Further Education.
The awards are financed by sponsorship from Fergal Quinn, and the awards are named after Senator Fergal Quinn, who was the first Chairman of the steering committee for the then new Leaving Certificate Applied in 1995. It was he who oversaw the rolling out of the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme, the embedding of it in the Irish Education system, and he oversaw its continuing development in the following years.
VEX Robotics
On Thursday 26th January, the VEX Robotics Mid-West Competition was held in Dell Technologies in Limerick. Ms O’Malley and a group of students from Nenagh College entered the competition. They have been working on building, programming and preparing the robot for the last couple of months. They created a fantastic robot that came 2nd in the qualification rounds. Unfortunately, they were beaten in the semi-final of the competition. The group worked amazing well as a team; with problem solving and strategy planning to the fore on the day. Well done the Robotics Team in Nenagh College!
Fundraiser for The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland
A huge well done to Emma Ryan who raised €460 for The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland as part of her contemporary issues module for Social Education.
Here she is presenting the cheque to Jennifer, Bridget and Mel, all representatives from the North Tipperary Branch which is here in Nenagh. Well done Emma!
6LCA trip to Pure Skill
Students from 6LCA enjoyed an afternoon at Pure Skill in Galway. Here they experienced a range of sporting activities including soccer, tennis, rugby, hurling, basketball, golf, cricket, and baseball. This trip was linked to the unit Healthy Life Choices which they are studying as part of their Mathematical Applications course.
Student Council of Nenagh College
On Thursday 19th of January, the Student Council of Nenagh College gathered together for a training session, to identify roles in the executive council and to make plans for upcoming events we will organise. Thanks to all students who volunteer their time and energy to this very active student council.
